Project Proposal 2023
The Locus, a site-specific interdisciplinary project at Bucheon Art Bunker B39, is composed of a vertical lighting installation that descends from the bunker’s ceiling, reaching down to the floor from a height of 39 meters. The lighting delineates a 3-dimensional space of pure light (4 x 4 x 39m), creating a small world illuminated by solar energy coming directly from a panel installed on the roof of the building.
To create a distinct boundary of light in the air from the ceiling and to project a square-shaped area of light onto the floor of consistent intensity, various technical considerations and experiments are required. The first implementation plan involves creating a specific lighting device using reflectors and lenses. The layout is illustrated in the diagram below:
To make the stream of light more visible in the air, fog will be dispersed throughout the space.
A performer wearing light sensors (photoresistors) on different parts of the body, moves freely within and outside the boundaries of light. An interactive flow of sound, changing according to the degree and duration of each sensor’s contact with the light, is played through multiple speakers inside the bunker.
Despite the performer’s small stature within the vast space, their movements generate a powerful sound, akin to a storm resonating throughout the bunker. This soundstorm draws inspiration from traditional Korean musical instruments—janggu, buk, Jing, kkwaenggwari, each symbolizing rain, clouds, wind, and thunder respectively. The resulting sound, shaped by the performer’s spontaneous movements and interactions with light and space, depicts the turmoil caused by human intervention in the world.
